If you drove past 11103 U.S. Highway 51 South last November, you saw the whole story. A drive-thru line curled past the pumps at MAPCO. Guests in cow costumes redeemed free entrées at the door. A brand-new Chick-fil-A started serving sandwiches at 6 a.m. on November 6, 2025, and by the time the line thinned out, owner-operator Alphonso Ruffin Jr. had brought his second restaurant to Tipton County and roughly 120 new jobs to Munford. It was loud, visible, and impossible to miss if you drove Highway 51 that week.
Seven months later, the county's own business filings tell a different story about where Munford is actually growing, and almost none of it happened anywhere you'd notice from a car window.
The Opening Everyone Already Talked About
Ruffin had run Chick-fil-A Millington since 2021 before taking on the Munford location, and the company marked the opening with a $25,000 community donation on top of the usual grand-opening promotions. That's the kind of business news a town absorbs in a single weekend. Everyone who lives here already knows about it, has probably eaten there, and doesn't need a blog post to tell them a Chick-fil-A opened on the south end of town.
What most residents haven't seen is the quieter number sitting in the county clerk's records from the following spring.
Twenty-One Licenses, Seven Towns, One Clear Leader
In June 2026, the Tipton County Clerk's office recorded 21 new business licenses spread across seven communities in the county, and according to Paper Folds News, an independent outlet covering Tipton County, that filing period left "Munford emerging as the busiest hub for new business activity." Not Covington. Not Atoka. Munford.
Break the filings down by category and a pattern shows up fast. Construction and home-improvement trades led the pack with four new licenses: a contractor, a painting company, a cabinet installer, and a window-replacement business. Personal and professional services matched that with four more: a bookkeeping firm, a stylist, an event-design business, and a residential cleaning service. Retail and creative goods rounded out another four, including an author selling books through Amazon and a maker of sewn bags and crafts.
Read as a list, that's a healthy month for a small town. Read against the addresses attached to each filing, it's a different story entirely.
Where the Businesses Actually Live

Look at the middle column. Of the twelve businesses above, only three list a suite or building number: Style Thairapy, The Grooming Loft, and O'Brien's Auto and Body. Everything else is registered to an ordinary residential street. Susie Cove. Bryanna Lane. Plum Tree Circle. Dacus Drive. These aren't commercial addresses with a sign out front. They're the kind of streets you'd drive down on your way to a cul-de-sac, not a shopping center.
That doesn't mean Harber Built is running a construction company out of a living room, or that Sew Savvy's owner is stitching crafts at the kitchen table between school pickups, though for some of these businesses that's exactly what's happening. Contractors, painters, event planners, and bookkeepers commonly register their license at home even when the actual work happens at a client's house or job site. What it does mean is that a resident scanning the storefronts on Highway 51 for signs of a business boom will miss almost all of it. The growth this June wasn't behind new glass. It was behind mailboxes.
Two Places That Still Do the Actual Gathering
None of that changes where Munford residents actually run into each other. Even with a dozen new business names spread across a dozen different streets, the town's public gathering points haven't multiplied to match. There are still, for practical purposes, two.
The first is Veterans Plaza, where a country concert originally scheduled for April 18 finally lands on August 21 from 7 to 10 p.m. Food trucks confirmed for the night include The Green Beetle, Rainbow Squeezed Lemonade, and Ice Cream Tour. The second is The Band Room, where the City of Munford and Mahjong in Motion host open Mahjong play every Thursday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., open to anyone who's taken a class or played before.
Neither of those venues has anything to do with cabinet installers or bookkeepers. But they're the reason a town this size can absorb 21 new business filings in a single month without most residents noticing. When the actual commerce spreads out to residential streets, the plaza and the band room are still where people run into their new neighbors, whether that neighbor happens to run a cleaning service out of Dacus Drive or not.
The Rotation That Hasn't Moved
The restaurant lineup, by contrast, has stayed remarkably stable. Outlaw Bar-B-Que, The Munford Cafe on Reeder Road, JT's Burgers & Wings, Mandarin Wok, Breakfast Cove, Los Alebrijes, The Peach Cobbler Factory, Olympic Steak & Pizza, Margaritas, and Sakura Garden still make up the core of where people eat around town. None of June's filings touched that list.
That stability says something else about this town. Paper Folds News, the same outlet tracking business licenses closely enough to spot Munford's lead, also covers restaurant health inspections in enough detail to report when a business needs a follow-up visit, including a July 16, 2026 item on Margaritas requiring another one. That's not a knock on the restaurant. It's a sign of how tightly a paper this size follows a town this size. If a business license gets filed on Plum Tree Circle in June, somebody's writing it down by July.
Watching the Right Street
The visible version of Munford's growth this year is a Chick-fil-A with a drive-thru line and 120 new employees. The real number, the one that actually says something about where this town is headed, is the one sitting quietly in the county clerk's June filings: a dozen new businesses registered not to storefronts but to ordinary streets most residents drive past without a second look.
